15 Most Beautiful Greek Words

Hello, hello!

Today we are going to see fifteen of the most beautiful Greek words and what do they mean.

Translation of some of these words wasn’t very easy because they don’t actually have an English equivalent.

I have visited some forums and I saw that there is a battle still going on of how the word “χαρμολύπη” can be translated more accurately in English for instance.

So, you get the feeling…

But no worries, even if the translation does not reach 100%, is pretty close to 90% so you’re definitely going to understand them without having a problem.

Disclaimer:

These are the words I find beautiful. It doesn’t mean that there aren’t more or that you might have a totally different list on your mind.

Two factors have determined my list.

The meaning of these words and the sound of them, their euphony. For me, these are poetic words. I always like to hear or read them.

I also tried to avoid some obvious ones like “αγάπη” or “φιλία” in order to have a chance to dig a little deeper into the Greek language and show you how rich it is and how melodic can be.

For me these are not just words, this is music 🙂

So, let’s go and see them.

1. (η) Ευδαιμονία (Evdemonia)

Η πλήρης άνθιση της ανθρώπινης προσωπικότητας. Η έντονη ευτυχία.

I pliris anthisi tis anthropinis prosopikotitas. I entoni eftihia.

The full bloom of human personality. The intense happiness.

Bliss / Human Flourishing

Examples:

• Η ευδαιμονία είναι προσωπική υπόθεση. (I evdemonia eene prosopiki eepothesi) –
  Eudaimonia is a personal matter.

• Μακάρι να ζήσεις με ευδαιμονία. (Makari na zisees me evdemonia) – I hope you live with eudaimonia.

• Μερικές φορές, η ευδαιμονία κρύβεται στα απλά πράγματα. (Merikes fores i evdemonia krivete sta apla pragmata) – Sometimes, eudaimonia is hidden in simple things.

2. (η) Αρμονία (Armonia)

Η συμμετρία, η ισορροπία.

I simetria, i isorhopia.

Symmetry, balance.

Harmony

Examples:

• Στη ζωή, είναι σημαντικό να βρούμε αρμονία μεταξύ δουλειάς και προσωπικού χρόνου. (Sti zoi, eene simantiko na vrume armonia metaksi dulias ke prosopiku hronu) – In life, it’s important to find harmony between work and personal time.

• Ζούμε σε αρμονία με τους γείτονές μας εδώ και χρόνια. (Zume se armonia me tus yitones mas edo ke hronia) – We have lived in harmony with our neighbors for years.

• Η αρμονία στις σχέσεις απαιτεί κατανόηση και σεβασμό. (I armonia stis shesees apetee katanoisi ke sevasmo) – Harmony in relationships requires understanding and respect.

3. (adj.) Μελίρρυτος / η / ο (Melirhitos)

Ο γλυκομίλητος.

O glikomilitos.

The soft-spoken.

Mellifluent

Examples:

• Η μελίρρυτη αφήγηση του παραμυθιού κράτησε τα παιδιά μαγεμένα. (I melhiriti afiyisee tu paramithiu kratise ta pedia mayemena) – The honey-flowing narration of the fairy tale kept the children spellbound.

• Ο μελίρρυτος ήχος του ρυακιού δημιουργούσε μια αίσθηση γαλήνης. (O melhiritos eehos tu riakiu dimiurguse mia esthisi galinis) – The honey-flowing sound of the stream created a sense of peace.

• Τα μελίρρυτα λόγια του ποιητή άγγιξαν τις καρδιές όλων. (Ta melhirita loyia tu peeiti aggiksan tis kardies olon) – The poet’s sweet-sounding words touched everyone’s hearts.

4. (η) Χαρμολύπη (Harmolipi)

Η συνύπαρξη χαράς και λύπης.

I siniparxi haras ke lipis.

The coexistence of joy and sorrow.

Joyful sorrow

Examples:

• Η συνάντηση με παλιούς φίλους είχε μια αίσθηση χαρμολύπης, καθώς θυμηθήκαμε όμορφες στιγμές αλλά και το πέρασμα του χρόνου. (I sinantisee me palius filus eehe mia esthisi harmolipis, kathos thimithikame omorfes stigmes alla ke to perasma tu hronu) – The reunion with old friends had a sense of charmolipi, as we remembered good times but also the passing of time.

• Στις μεγάλες γιορτές, η χαρμολύπη είναι φυσιολογική, καθώς σκεφτόμαστε τους αγαπημένους που δεν είναι πια μαζί μας. (Stis megales yiortes i harmolipi eene feesioloyikee, kathos skeftomaste tus agapimenus pu den eene pia mazee mas) –
  During big celebrations, charmolipi is normal, as we think of loved ones who are no longer with us.

• Η αποφοίτηση ήταν μια στιγμή χαρμολύπης, καθώς οι μαθητές αποχαιρετούσαν το σχολείο με δάκρυα και χαμόγελα. (I apofeetisi itan mia stigmi harmolipis, kathos i mathites apoheretusan to sholeeo me dakria ke hamoyela) – The graduation was a moment of charmolipi, as students said goodbye to school with tears and smiles.

5. (η) Ψυχή (Psichi)

Το αθάνατο στοιχείο της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης.

To athanato stihio tis anthropinis iparxis.

The immortal element of human existence.

Soul

Examples:

• Ο χορός είναι η έκφραση της ψυχής. (O horos eene i ekfrasee tis psichis) – Dance is the expression of the soul.

• Το βιβλίο αυτό με άγγιξε βαθιά στην ψυχή. (To vivlio afto me aggikse vathia stin psichi) – This book touched me deeply in my soul.

• Η ψυχή του ήταν γεμάτη καλοσύνη και αγάπη. (I psichi tu eetan yematee kalosinee ke agapee) – His soul was filled with kindness and love.

6. (η) Κάθαρση (Catharsi)

Η απαλλαγή από κάτι ξένο ή βλαβερό. Η λύτρωση.

I apalagi apo kati xeno i vlavero. I litrosi.

The exemption of something foreign or harmful. Redemption.

Catharsis

Examples:

• Η γραφή του ημερολογίου μου προσφέρει μια μορφή κάθαρσης. (I grafee tu imeroloyiu mu prosferee mia morfee catharsis) – Writing in my diary provides a form of catharsis.

• Μερικές φορές, το κλάμα μπορεί να φέρει την κάθαρση που χρειαζόμαστε για να προχωρήσουμε. (Merikes fores to klama mporee na feree tin catharsi pu chriazomaste ya na prohorisume) – Sometimes, crying can bring the catharsis we need to move forward.

• Οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες έβρισκαν κάθαρση μέσα από τις τραγωδίες του θεάτρου. (I arhei Ellines evriskan catharsi mesa apo tis tragodies tu theatru) – The ancient Greek found catharsis through the tragedies of the theater.

7. (η) Ελευθερία (Eleftheria)

Η δυνατότητα της κατά βούληση δράσης.

I dinatotita tis kata vulisi drasis.

The possibility of action at will.

Freedom

Examples:

• Η ελευθερία είναι ένα από τα πιο βασικά ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα. (I eleftheria eene ena apo ta pio vasika anthropina dikeomata) – Freedom is one of the most fundamental human rights.

• Μερικές φορές, η ελευθερία μπορεί να έρθει με ευθύνες. (Merikes fores, i eleftheria boree na erthee me efthines) – Sometimes, freedom can come with responsibilities.

• Η ιστορία μας διδάσκει τη σημασία της ελευθερίας και της ανεξαρτησίας. (I istoria mas didaskee ti simasia tis eleftherias ke tis aneksartisias) – History teaches us the importance of freedom and independence.

8. (το) Λυκαυγές (Likavyes)

Το μισόφωτο πριν χαράξει για τα καλά η μέρα.

To misofoto prin haraxi ya ta kala i mera.

The light before dawn.

Predawn

Examples:

• Το λυκαυγές ζωγράφιζε τον ουρανό με απαλά ροζ και πορτοκαλί χρώματα. (To likavyes zografize ton urano me apala roz ke portokalee hromata) – The twilight painted the sky with soft pink and orange hues.

• Αγαπούσε να πηγαίνει στο βουνό και να παρακολουθεί το λυκαυγές από ψηλά. (Agapuse na piyenee sto vuno ke na parakoluthee to likavyes apo psila) – He loved to go to the mountain and watch the twilight from above.

• Το λυκαυγές της νέας ημέρας έφερε ελπίδα και νέες ευκαιρίες. (To likavyes tis neas imeras efere elpida ke nees efkeries) – The dawn of the new day brought hope and new opportunities.

9. (η) Δροσοσταλίδα (Drosostalida)

Η μικρή σταγόνα δροσιάς.

I mikri stagona drosias.

The small drop of dew.

Dewdrop

Examples:

• Η δροσοσταλίδα που είχε σχηματιστεί στο λουλούδι αντανακλούσε τα χρώματα του ουρανού. (I drosostalida pu eehe shimatistee sto luludi antanakluse ta hromata tu uranu) – The dewdrop that had formed on the flower reflected the colors of the sky.

• Το γρασίδι ήταν καλυμμένο με δροσοσταλίδες, δίνοντας μια αίσθηση φρεσκάδας στο τοπίο. (To grasidi itan kalimmeno me drosostalides, dinontas mia esthisee freskadas sto topio) – The grass was covered with dewdrops, giving a sense of freshness to the landscape.

• Η δροσοσταλίδα που είχε πέσει στο τραπέζι γυάλιζε όπως ένα μικρό διαμάντι. (I drosostalida pu eehe pesee sto trapezee yialize opos ena mikro diamanti) – The dewdrop that had fallen on the table glistened like a tiny diamond.

10. (adj.) Ιλαρός / ή / ό (Ilaros)

Ο πολύ χαρούμενος, ο χαρωπός.

O poli harumenos, o haropos.

A person who is very happy and cheerful.

Hilarious

Example:

• Η ιλαρή έκφραση στο πρόσωπό του ήταν ένδειξη της ευτυχίας που ένιωθε. (I ilari ekfrasee sto prosopo tu itan endixee tis eftichias pu eniothe) – The joyful expression on his face was a sign of the happiness he felt.

• Το ιλαρό γέλιο των παιδιών έκανε την αυλή να ζωντανέψει. (To ilaro yelio ton pedion ekane tin avli na zontanepsee) – The joyful laughter of the children brought the yard to life.

• Ο ιλαρός τρόπος που αντιμετώπισε την πρόκληση ήταν αξιοθαύμαστος. (O ilaros tropos pu antimetopise tin proklisi itan axiothavmastos) – The cheerful way he faced the challenge was admirable.

11. (adj.) Μειλίχιος / α / ο (Milihios)

Αυτός που χαρακτηρίζεται από γλυκύτητα στους τρόπους.

Aftos pu haraktirizete apo glikitita stus tropus.

A person with sweet manners.

Suave

Examples:

• Παρά τη σκληρή εμφάνισή του, ήταν στην πραγματικότητα πολύ μειλίχιος και ευγενικός. (Para ti skliri emfanisi tu, itan stin pragmatikotita polee milihios ke evgenikos) – Despite his tough appearance, he was actually very suave and polite.

• Ο δάσκαλος έχει μια μειλίχια προσωπικότητα που ηρεμεί τα παιδιά στην τάξη. (O daskalos ehee mia milihia prosopikotita pu iremee ta pedia stin taxee) – The teacher has a suave personality that calms the children in the classroom.

• Η μειλίχια διάθεσή της στον τρόπο που μιλάει κάνει τις συζητήσεις μαζί της ευχάριστες και ήρεμες. (I milihia diathesi tis ston tropo pu milaee kanee tis sizitisees mazi tis efharistes ke iremes.) – Her suave demeanor in the way she speaks makes conversations with her pleasant and calm.

12. (η) Ουτοπία (Outopia)

Ένας φανταστικός κόσμος όπου όλα λειτουργούν αρμονικά.

Enas fantastikos kosmos opu ola liturgun armonika.

An imaginary world where everything works in harmony.

Utopia

Example

• Ονειρεύεται μια ουτοπία όπου όλοι είναι ευτυχισμένοι. (Onirevete mia outopia opu olee eene eftihismenee) – He dreams of an utopia where everyone is happy.

• Η σκέψη ενός κόσμου χωρίς πόλεμο μοιάζει με ουτοπία. (I skepsi enos kosmu horis polemo miazee me outopia) – The thought of a world without war seems like an utopia.

• Το βιβλίο περιγράφει μια ουτοπία με όλα τα προβλήματα λυμένα. (To vivlio perigrafee mia outopia me ola ta provlimata) – The book describes an utopia with all problems solved.

13. (η) Ευημερία (Evimeria)

Η κατάσταση στην οποία κάποιος κάνει πολύ καλή ζωή.

I katastasi stin opia kapios kani poli kali zoi.

The situation in which one leads a very good life.

Prosperity

Examples:

• Εύχομαι σε όλους ευημερία και υγεία για το νέο έτος. (Efhome se olus evimeria ke iyeea yia to neo etos) – I wish everyone prosperity and health for the new year.

• Η ευημερία της χώρας εξαρτάται από την οικονομική ανάπτυξη. (I evimeria tis horas exartate apo tin eekonomikee anaptixee) – The prosperity of the country depends on economic growth.

• Η ευημερία της οικογένειάς του φαίνεται στα χαμόγελα των μελών της. (I evimeria tis eekoyenias tu fenete sta hamoyela ton melon tis.) – The well-being of his family is evident in the smiles of its members.

14. (η) Φωταψία (Fotapsia)

Ο έντονος φωτισμός.

O entonos fotismos.

The bright lighting.

Illumination

Examples:

• Η φωταψία των δρόμων τη νύχτα δημιουργεί μια όμορφη ατμόσφαιρα στην πόλη. (I fotapsia ton dromon ti nichta dimiuryee mia omorfi atmosfera stin polee) – The street illumination at night creates a beautiful atmosphere in the city.

• Η φωταψία του ουρανού με τα αστέρια ήταν εντυπωσιακή κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας. (I fotapsia tu uranu me ta asteria itan entiposiakee kata ti diarkeea tis nichtas) – The illumination of the sky with the stars was impressive during the night.

• Η φωταψία της σκηνής έκανε τα πρόσωπα των ηθοποιών να λάμπουν. (I fotapsia tis skinis ekane ta prosopa ton ithopion na lampun) – The illumination of the stage made the actors’ faces shine.

15. (το) Ψήγμα (Psigma)

Το πολύ μικρό κομμάτι.

To poli mikro komati.

The very small piece.

A grain of (sth)

Examples:

• Η ταινία έχει ψήγματα κωμωδίας μέσα σε ένα δράμα. (I tenia ehee psigmata komodias mesa se ena drama) – The film has grains of comedy within a drama.

• Το έργο τέχνης έχει ψήγματα διαφορετικών τεχνικών και στυλ. (To ergo tehnis ehee psigmata diaforetikon tehnikon ke stil) – The artwork has grains of different techniques and styles.

• Το κείμενο περιέχει ψήγματα από την προσωπική του εμπειρία. (To keemeno periehee psigmata apo tin prosopiki tu empeeria) – The text contains grains of his personal experience.
